The Challenge

The Hayward OmniLogic app faced significant challenges that impacted user satisfaction and operational efficiency.

Initially, the app was cumbersome for new and inexperienced users, reflected in low user ratings that threatened the brand’s reputation. These usability issues made it difficult for users to navigate and effectively control their pool settings, leading to frustration and decreased engagement.

Additionally, Hayward was grappling with the complexity of maintaining multiple codebases for iOS and Android platforms. This not only inflated development costs but also led to inconsistencies in features and user experience across different devices. The challenge was not just to enhance the app’s usability but also to consolidate these divergent systems into a single, streamlined platform that could offer a consistent experience while reducing maintenance overhead.

This case study focuses on overcoming these challenges by redesigning the app to be more user-friendly and technologically unified, aiming to restore user confidence and solidify Hayward’s position as a leader in smart pool solutions.

The Goal

The objective of the Hayward OmniLogic redesign was to enhance the user experience by creating an intuitive and stress-free interface suitable for all pool owners, especially newcomers.

The project aimed to simplify user interactions by streamlining access to frequently used features, reducing the number of steps in common tasks, and presenting critical information in a clear, accessible format. The design also focused on a calming aesthetic, essential for a product used in leisure settings.

In addition to improving user engagement, the redesign sought to unify the underlying technology platforms. By consolidating separate iOS and Android codebases into a single React Native codebase, the initiative aimed to reduce development time and costs, simplify maintenance, and ensure consistent features across devices. This approach was expected to shorten time to market for updates and facilitate future expansions of Hayward’s smart product ecosystem.

The Process

My approach involved a close collaboration with Hayward to gather extensive customer and installer feedback, which guided the redesign strategy.

Throughout the Hayward OmniLogic app redesign, my process was deeply collaborative and interactive, aimed at aligning closely with Hayward’s expectations and user needs. The project kicked off with a series of workshops that brought together key stakeholders from Hayward and our design team. These sessions were crucial for establishing a shared vision and understanding the specific functionalities that the new app required.

After the initial workshops, I reviewed the user research conducted by Hayward to better understand the existing pain points and areas for improvement. This research provided a solid foundation for the subsequent design stages, ensuring that the solutions proposed would effectively address real user concerns.

Building on this foundation, I developed comprehensive user flows that mapped out each step of the user’s interaction with the app, ensuring a logical and intuitive structure. These user flows then served as the blueprint for the wireframes I created, which laid out the visual architecture of the app without yet adding stylistic elements.

Finally, these wireframes were transformed into high-fidelity (HiFi) designs. These detailed designs included all visual elements, such as colors, typography, and icons, providing a complete look at what the final app would resemble. Each of these stages involved regular reviews and feedback sessions with Hayward to refine and perfect the designs, ensuring that the final product would truly resonate with users and meet the high standards set by Hayward for their innovative pool equipment.

The Result

The outcome of the Hayward OmniLogic app redesign was overwhelmingly positive. The app's ratings soared to 4.6 stars across major platforms.

The increase in user satisfaction is a testament to the enhanced user interface and functionality. The connectivity rate of Omni-enabled devices reached an impressive 93%, showcasing the effectiveness of the app’s integration capabilities. Feedback from users highlighted the ease of equipment control and an overall improved interaction with the product, marking a significant step forward in Hayward’s commitment to innovative smart pool management.
