The Challenge

The primary challenge in the BACtrack Skyn project was to develop a user interface that could effectively process and present raw data from the Skyn device into the app in a way that users could easily understand and act upon.

This involved ensuring the accuracy of the data transferred via Bluetooth and designing an interface that could display this information in real-time without overwhelming the user.

A critical part of this challenge was creating an intuitive categorization system for BAC levels, which segmented complex data into four understandable “buckets” or categories that could quickly communicate the wearer’s intoxication level. Additionally, the app needed to incorporate features that allowed users to view both real-time and historical data efficiently, helping them identify patterns in their alcohol consumption over time.

Ensuring the app’s responsiveness and reliability was essential, as users needed timely alerts about their BAC levels to make informed decisions, especially in social settings. The development team also had to address potential technical issues such as data synchronization, battery optimization for prolonged use, and maintaining user engagement through a clean and appealing visual design. Each of these elements required research, user testing, and iterative design to create an app that was functional, engaging, and easy to use.

The Goal

The overarching goal of the BACtrack Skyn project was to revolutionize how individuals monitor their alcohol consumption by making the process both passive and discreet.

 

The project aimed to empower users with a wearable device that seamlessly integrates into their daily lives, providing continuous, real-time monitoring without requiring any active input or conspicuous actions that might draw attention in social settings.

 

A key objective was to implement customizable thresholds within the app to enhance the usability and effectiveness of the device. Users could set specific BAC levels at which they wanted to receive alerts. This feature was designed to allow users to maintain better control over their drinking by receiving timely push notifications when their BAC approached or surpassed these predetermined limits. The notifications were designed to be subtle, ensuring that users could discreetly be informed of their status and make decisions accordingly without constantly checking their devices manually. This subtlety reassures users that the device respects their privacy and discretion.

The Process

We employed an iterative, collaborative methodology to polish every detail, ensuring a smooth and intuitive app experience.

The design approach in the BACtrack Skyn project was highly user-focused, beginning with a comprehensive research and discovery phase. I conducted an in-depth competitive analysis to gauge existing market offerings, highlighting the pros and cons of different wearable devices and pinpointing opportunities for innovation in alcohol monitoring technology. Simultaneously, user research was undertaken to collect valuable insights into potential users’ behaviors, needs, and preferences, which informed the initial concept development. Multiple design concepts were created, each proposing different ways to visualize and interact with Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) data. These concepts were refined through sketches and wireframes, setting the foundational structure and user flow for the Skyn app.

The project transitioned into a more detailed design phase, during which wireframes evolved into interactive prototypes, with a strong emphasis on usability and aesthetic appeal. This stage was critical for testing the intuitiveness of the user interface and gathering user feedback. Iterative testing sessions were conducted to ensure the app was not only functional but also engaging and easy to use. Feedback from these sessions informed subsequent iterations, where features were enhanced and the interface was adjusted to meet user expectations more closely. 

Collaboration with developers and product managers was continuous, ensuring that each design iteration was feasible and aligned with technical capabilities.  As constraints arose during the testing and engineering process, the designs needed to change to fit those constraints. Finally, high-fidelity designs were developed, incorporating refined visual elements such as color schemes, typography, and detailed iconography.

The Result

The BACtrack Skyn project achieved significant success with the launch of the wearable biosensor and its companion mobile app, initially rolled out to a research group as beta testers.

This strategic move aimed to refine the algorithm through real-world feedback and ensure the accuracy and reliability of the BAC readings. This research is ongoing and the more data we get, the more we can refine the algorithms and, in turn, the design. The device offered discreet, real-time monitoring of Blood Alcohol Content (BAC), empowering users to make informed decisions regarding their alcohol consumption. 

Enhanced by intuitive app design, user-defined BAC thresholds, and timely notifications, the product significantly improved the user experience. This phase not only tested the functionality and user interface but also contributed to safer drinking practices among participants, showcasing our commitment to using advanced technology to enhance public health and safety. The feedback from this initial deployment is instrumental in optimizing the algorithm and preparing the system for a broader consumer launch.
